Scoliosis

Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine that can develop in childhood or adolescence, often without a known cause. While idiopathic scoliosis is the most common form, other factors such as congenital deformities, neuromuscular conditions, degenerative changes in adulthood, and postural imbalances can also contribute to the condition.

Overview

Scoliosis is a medical condition characterized by an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, which can develop during childhood or adolescence. While the exact cause of scoliosis is often unknown, it can lead to a range of symptoms, including uneven shoulders, a noticeable curve in the back, and, in some cases, discomfort or pain.

What are the causes of neck pain?

The most common form of scoliosis is idiopathic scoliosis, where the exact cause is unknown. It typically occurs during growth spurts in adolescence and may have a genetic component, as it can run in families.
Congenital scoliosis results from a spinal deformity that occurs during fetal development. This type can occur when the vertebrae do not form properly, leading to an abnormal curvature of the spine at birth.
Scoliosis can also develop as a result of neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida. These conditions can affect muscle control and function, leading to imbalances that contribute to spinal curvature.
Adult scoliosis can arise due to degenerative changes in the spine, including disc degeneration and arthritis. Over time, these changes can lead to a misalignment of the vertebrae and the development of curvature.
Poor posture or imbalances in muscle strength may contribute to the progression of scoliosis, particularly in individuals with pre-existing spinal conditions. Muscle imbalances can lead to uneven pull on the spine, exacerbating existing curvature.
